Duwweltjie by Thistle and Weed
Planted in 1961 by horse-plough by the growers grandfather, massive koffieklip stones were removed during the planting and used to make a wall which can be seen nearby. The Chenin blanc vines are beautiful, stand like trees and are covered in lichen. Planted in a duplex sand and clay soil this vineyard is particularly resilient and benefits from a cooling afternoon breeze in the peak of summer. And as the wine’s name implies, the vineyard is covered in Duwweltjie’s (Devils thorns), which stuck with us after that first visit to the vineyard many years ago in slip-slops.
