Vineyards and vines:
100% Chenin Blanc
Planted 1982
Wine of Origin: Stellenbosch
Waterford has been making Chenin blanc since the beginning under the Pecan Stream range. For the last 4 years there has been great effort to secure old vine Chenin blanc in the Stellenbosch region which is able to make world class wine. In 2017 there were 3 blocks old vines which we worked with and used these blocks to create our first Library Chenin blanc. Hopefully starting a new label of Chenin blanc under the Waterford label.
Vintage review 2017:
3rd year of drought in the Western Cape, becoming very noticeable in the natural mountain vegetation and low dam levels. Low winter rains but followed by near perfect growing conditions, moderate temperatures and lack of heat waves during harvest. Vineyards remained very healthy and produced lovely bunches, smaller than usual berries giving great concentration. Wines are extremely classical in style, with tight tannin structures and lovely acidities.
