DeMorgenzon

All wine estates in the Western Cape are beautiful and all have unique terroir. However, we believe that DeMorgenzon is the most extraordinary of them all. Our slopes rise from about 200m to nearly 400m above sea level and our vistas embrace Cape Town, Table Mountain, Cape Point, Cape Hangklip, the Hottentots Holland mountains, Helderberg and Simonsberg with the ocean as a backdrop. While we could call ourselves ‘mountain vineyards’ we prefer to be known as ‘garden vineyards’. In Spring specially chosen wildflowers flourish between our vines. We have no doubt that a biodiverse and ecologically sensitive environment produces infinitely better grapes and the beauty of our gardens is captured in every bottle of our wine.

The vineyard:

DeMorgenzon’s Chenin Blanc comes from low-yielding vines planted in 1972, which were originally planted as bush vines but recently lifted onto trellises. The vines are planted in decomposed granite soils, at altitudes of 250 to 300 meters above sea level. Close proximity to False Bay ensures cooling breezes in the warm summer months.

The Winemaker

Carl van der Merwe

Carl joined DeMorgenzon in July 2010 and currently fills the role of Cellarmaster and Chief Executive. Together with a successful team he has established DeMorgenzon as one of South Africa’s most highly regarded wine producers. Our innumerable local accolades include an unprecedented Platter’s White Wine of The Year for two years running, and International Trophies for Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc at the prestigious Decanter World Wine awards. The DeMorgenzon Reserve Chenin Blanc won The International Chenin Blanc Trophy for three years in a row at The International Wine Challenge in London.

Carl is highly driven towards producing excellent wines that reflect more than just great winemaking. Together with his team in the winery and the vineyards, Carl has created styles of wine that are a unique reflection of DeMorgenzon, and have proven to be highly regarded by some of the world’s leading wine judges. Carl’s philosophy is simple: to interfere as little as possible and as much as necessary. Winemaking at DeMorgenzon is highly detailed and focused and Carl is determined to improve on each years’ experience. A degree in Business Management and Oenology at Stellenbosch University and extensive experience abroad including a cumulative nine months at two Bordeaux Chateaux, a harvest in Washington State and a harvest in China, have laid the foundations for Carl to build a successful business and world class winery.

Carl firmly believes that a biodiverse and ecologically sensitive environment with minimal intervention, produces infinitely better grapes. He is deeply committed to the sustainable development of the South African wine industry.

The Viticulturist

Danie de Waal

Danie grew up down the road from DeMorgenzon on his family’s wine estate where he manage the vineyards for 5 years. After university and marrying his wife Trix, he spent time travelling and worked abroad for two years before returning.

With Danie’s roosts firmly entrenched in the Stellenboschkloof, and his understanding, love and care for our terroir, the exceptional fruit of his enthusiasm is evident.
