Viticulture Consultant – Jaco Engelbrecht
Jaco finished his B.Agric degree in Viticulture and Agronomy at Elsenburg Agricultural College in 2007. He jumped straight into the wine industry, starting his career as a viticulturist at Darling Cellars on the West Coast. There he had his first encounter with old vines, and developed a love and passion for these vineyards that still burns in him today.
He left Darling Cellars at the end of 2011 and took on the viticulture reins at Boland Cellar in Paarl. As head viticulturist overseeing 2 200 hectares of vineyards, he headed various projects, including a terroir study of all the vineyards, that included terrain analysis (elevation, slope, aspect and solar radiation studies) and a full soil survey in conjunction with soil scientists Braham Oberholzer and Heinrich Schloms.
Jaco left Boland Cellar after five years of service and started his own venture as a viticultural consultant, with a focus on remote sensing and technology application in the wine industry.
Today he is part of the two-man team running the OVP as part of his consultation profile.
